Offshore Wind Project Clears Final Federal Permitting Hurdle
A long-delayed offshore wind farm cleared its final federal permitting hurdle Wednesday, paving the way for construction to begin later this year, developers announced. The project is expected to supply power to several hundred thousand homes once fully operational.
The approval follows a multi-year environmental review process that included revised routing for underwater transmission cables after concerns were raised about fishing grounds and marine habitats. Developers agreed to additional monitoring requirements as a condition of the permit.
Industry groups called the decision a milestone for the broader offshore wind sector, which has faced financing setbacks and supply chain delays in recent years. Local fishing associations said they would continue monitoring the project's environmental commitments as construction proceeds.
