FDA Panel to Review Fast-Tracked Alzheimer's Treatment This Fall

An independent advisory panel will review a fast-tracked Alzheimer's treatment this fall after the drug showed modest but statistically significant slowing of cognitive decline in a late-stage trial, regulators announced Wednesday. The therapy, administered as a monthly infusion, targets a protein believed to contribute to disease progression.

The manufacturer said the trial's safety profile was consistent with earlier-stage studies, though a small percentage of participants experienced brain swelling that required monitoring. Patient advocacy groups welcomed the accelerated timeline while urging regulators to weigh the risks carefully.

If approved, the treatment would join a small class of drugs targeting the underlying disease process rather than symptoms alone. A final decision is expected within months of the panel's recommendation, though the agency is not bound by the panel's vote.
