Rural Hospitals Warn of Staffing Crunch Ahead of Flu Season

Rural hospital administrators are warning of a growing nursing shortage that could strain emergency departments heading into the fall and winter flu season, according to a survey released Tuesday by a coalition of regional health systems. More than a third of respondents said they currently have unfilled nursing positions that have stayed open for over six months.

Administrators pointed to a combination of factors, including competition from higher-paying urban hospitals and a wave of retirements among veteran staff. Some facilities have turned to traveling nurse contracts to fill gaps, though officials say the added cost is unsustainable long term.

State health officials said they are exploring loan-forgiveness incentives to attract new graduates to rural placements, but acknowledged any impact would take years to materialize. Hospital leaders are urging faster action before flu season arrives.
