Health Officials Report Early Success in Regional Measles Containment Effort
Public health officials said Thursday that a targeted vaccination push has sharply slowed the spread of a measles outbreak that had affected several counties since early spring. New case counts have fallen for three consecutive weeks, and no new hospitalizations were reported in the past ten days.
The response combined mobile vaccination clinics with door-to-door outreach in under-vaccinated communities, an approach officials credited for reaching families who had missed routine immunizations during recent years. Local health departments say they plan to keep clinics running through the summer as a precaution.
While officials called the trend encouraging, they urged continued vigilance, noting that measles remains highly contagious and that vaccination rates in some pockets of the region still lag behind the threshold needed for herd immunity.
